History

-Grand Duchy of Lithuania formed by Heads of Russia > 1822-1827 Alexander out of Polonophilia

-consisting of Russian Partitions of Poland minus the first

-however, autonomy truncated by Heads of Russia > 1837-1898 Michael II

-no Sejm called

-when this leads to rebellion in 1859 officially annexed entirely into Russia

-post 1859 many Lithuanians flee

-more aristocratic "Whites" tend to flee to Prussia, more republican and anti-serfdom "Reds" to France

-and this reinforces itself in decades after as France sees growth of more militaristic organizations

-paramilitaries in France plot violent revolution

-and with many Lithuanians either working in France or going there for remittance it makes impact

-with French Wars > Fourth French War (1880-4) a lot of Lithuanians serve on French side

-despite defeat they then try a revolt in Russia that fails

-then comes Russia's Wars > Lithuanian War of Independence (1896-1902) and it breaks free

-creating a weird multilingual state

-with several cantons in federal system

-and Polish as lingua franca
